Brent Haddock
What started as a camping trip to the San Rafael Swell, where I first experienced desert canyons, cactus and sagebrush, led to my love affair with the ancients. Each canyon contained thousands of engravings –petroglyphs—on desert varnish that looked like animals, birds, people, hands, abstract designs and fantastic beings. These engravings were exactly as the ancient artists had drawn them many centuries ago. I felt as if I was looking directly into the minds of these ancient people.
These prehistoric hunters and gatherers who roamed the region in seasonal cycles for thousands of years left their art forms and symbolism on natural rock surfaces. Making marks on a hard surface became a common connection between the ancients and myself. While they were concerned with engraving a rock surface, I was concerned with etching a copper plate
.
While on location, I sketch and photograph the ancient glyphs situated in their hidden splendor and bring them back to the studio where they are used as inspiration for my work. My intent is to use them as raw material, sometimes reconstructing them to create a unique contemporary vision. The power, mystery, and magic of these ancient images intrigue me and I seek to unveil and express those qualities in my etchings, rather than documenting their historical importance.
Semi-abstract, my etchings are characterized by graphic compositions, natural elements of design and subtle color harmonies. Hand printed, they are made using the creative and expressive dynamics of a new, safer, non-toxic approach to printmaking that uses no harmful acids, solvents or chemicals. The etchings are printed in editions of 30 or less, on 100% rag content paper.
